The “ASEAN Action Towards Circular Economy: Move Forward with Extended Producer Responsibility”

 

The “ASEAN Action Towards Circular Economy: Move Forward with Extended Producer Responsibility” forum is a collaborative effort organised by ASEAN Centre for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue (ACSDSD), C asean (Social Enterprise) and Thailand Supply Chain Network.

Scheduled for Thursday, 28 March 2024, at the C asean Auditorium, 10th floor, CW Tower, Ratchadapisek Road, Bangkok, is pivotal for ASEAN nations to deliberate on integrating EPR principles within the Circular Economy framework.

The event will provide a comprehensive platform for stakeholders, from policymakers and industry leaders to environmental advocates, to collectively address the challenges and opportunities associated with transitioning towards a Circular Economy. Its primary objective is to foster a collaborative and informed dialogue, inspiring actionable strategies for adopting EPR across the ASEAN region.

On 19th January 2024, The “Sustainability Talks: Towards a Green ASEAN” is jointly organized by ASEAN Center for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue, Department of ASEAN Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thai Beverage Public Company Limited and C asean at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC).

The event features a special talk by Professor Jeffrey Sachs, President of United Nation’s Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).

Executive Director of ACSDSD paid a courtesy call on the Ambassador of Lao PDR

On Monday 8th January 2024, Mr. Chirachai Punkrasin, Executive Director of ACSDSD, along with Dr. Anthony Pramualratana, Deputy Executive Director of ACSDSD, and ACSDSD's staff paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Khamphan Anlavan, Ambassador of Lao PDR to Thailand, together with Mr. Kedmany Zouphonetheva, Second Secretary.

On this occasion, Mr. Chirachai Punkrasin introduced ACSDSD's role and gave a brief background of the Complementarities Roadmap, activities, and the responsibilities of ACSDSD. Also, they discussed the possible date for the upcoming meeting of the Governing Council with the Chair, Lao PDR, and would ideally be held in April and October 2024.

ASEAN SDGs Youth Camp: Empowering Agents of Change for SDGs

On 30th October 2023, ASEAN Centre for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue (ACSDSD), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Mahidol University welcomed 32 youth representatives from ASEAN Member States, Timor-Leste, and Japan who attended the "ASEAN SDGs Youth Camp: Empowering Agents of Change for SDGs" which was arranged on 30 October-3 November 2023 in Bangkok. Mr. Chirachai Punkrasin, Executive Director, ASEAN Centre for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue (ACSDSD), delivered welcoming remarks for the event, emphasising the role of youths as agents of change for equitable and sustainable world. 

The ASEAN SDGs Youth Camp was co-organised by ASEAN Centre for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue (ACSDSD), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Mahidol University to promote the role of youth as Agents of Change through 1-week programme with workshops, group works, and site visits aimed at incubating youth ideas on SDGs best practices including at the Terra Cycle, Bang Krachao, and the Forestias Project.

Towards Circularity: An ASEAN Perspective on Zero Waste Management in the Fashion Industry

On 2 October 2023, at Suksol Hotel Bangkok | 6th Kamolmart Room, the ASEAN Centre for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue (ACSDSD), the ASEAN Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform (ACESP), and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia to Thailand organised an event titled “Towards Circularity: An ASEAN Perspective on Zero Waste Management in the Fashion Industry.” Its primary objective is to raise public awareness about the significance of adopting zero-waste, sustainable (and) circular economy practices within the fashion industry, particularly within the ASEAN context. Over 130 onsite and online participants from 79 organisations from 19 countries participated in this event.

The opening remarks were delivered by His Excellency Rachmat Budiman, the Ambassador of Indonesia to Thailand. Mr. Chirachai Punkrasin, Executive Director of the ACSDSD and Mr. Mirza Nur Hidayat, the Director of Southeast Asian Affairs from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Indonesia, kindly welcomed the participants.

The event comprises two insightful panel discussions. The first-panel discussion, moderated by Treesuvit (David) Arriyavat from ACESP, ACSDSD, Mahidol University, explored “The Importance of Zero Waste Management and Circular Economy in the Fashion Industry, EU textile Regulation and its implication on ASEAN manufacturer, regional collaboration. The panel of experts includes Dr Peeraporn Palapleevalya, Sustainable Consumption and Production Association, Thailand (Thai SCP), Mr. Titonius Karto, President Director, PT. Suryamandiri Tekstilbuana, Associate Professor Dr Lerwen Liu, NTU Entrepreneurship Academy (NTUpreneur) | Founder Steam Platform Thailand, Lars Fogh Mortensen, EU Expert on sustainability and circular economy, and Mr. Basrie Kamba, Chairman of Rantai Tekstil Lestari, who shared their profound insights into why adopting zero waste management practices and embracing a circular economy is not just a choice but an absolute necessity for the fashion industry’s survival and sustainability.

The second panel discussion by Dr Anthony Pramualratana focuses on “The Future of Applying Zero Waste Management and Circular Economy in the Fashion Industry.” The panel of experts includes Mr. Jun Mardian, CBO, United Super Markets Holdings Inc (U.S.M. Holdings), Mr Porame Saiupparach, Leaf Creation Co., Ltd., Mr Kamin Pongsarojanavit, Thai Num Choke Textile, Nattinee Boonprasom | Child Finds Freedom, and Sarahah Kedah | Kloth Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. This session promised to glimpse the exciting innovations, technologies, and strategies that will shape the future of fashion in the ASEAN region and beyond. It’s a glimpse into the sustainable and circular fashion landscape we aspire to create.
